Armenia, a Christian Nation, and Azerbaijan, a Muslim Nation, are neighboring former Soviet Republics in the south Caucuses. Since the fall of the Soviet Union in 1991, tensions between Armenia and Azerbaijan have resulted in over 40 years of military conflict and 2 major wars. At the heart of the conflict was the Nagorno-Karabakh region. Nagorno-Karabakh is part of Azerbaijan, but its population of 120,000 is majority Armenian. In the first Armenian Azerbaijan war that ended in 1994, Armenia occupied Nagorno-Karabakh and surrounding areas in Azerbaijan. The Armenian occupation of Azerbaijan territory ended with the second Armenian Azerbaijan war in 2020. This war ended with a Russian brokered Cease Fire where Azerbaijan recovered all to their occupied territories except Nagorno-Karabakh which stayed under Armenian control. The Russian brokered cease fire ended in 2023 when Azerbaijan blockaded Nagorno-Karabakh and then attacked and occupied. This latest skirmish will not be the end of this conflict.
